  • Why is my floor expanding or contracting?

Seasonal expansion and contraction is normal, especially in New Jersey where we experience big temperature and humidity changes.

As indoor air becomes drier in the winter, wood floors can contract, creating small gaps. In warmer, more humid months, floors may expand again as moisture levels increase.

The natural movement is influenced by:

    • Indoor humidity levels
    • Temperature changes
    • HVAC use
    • Time of year

At MJA Wood Floors, we account for natural wood movement during installation by using proper acclimation, spacing, and installation techniques.

  • How can I prevent excessive movement?

    Maintaining consistent indoor conditions helps:

    • Keep indoor humidity between 35-55%
    • Use a humidifier during dry winter months if needed
    • Avoid drastic temperature swings inside the home

If you have concerns about your floors, we are always happy to take a look and explain what's normal versus what may need attention.

  • How to clean my floors ?

Avoid using products with ammonia, vinegar.

Sweep it with a soft, dry dust mop during the first week if it becomes dusty, but do not vacuum or mop the floor.

Avoid using cleaners on the floor for the first week, since these can absorb into the finish, which has yet to cure completely.

Sweep or vacuum the floor with a hard floor attachment to remove loose dirt.

Add ¼ cup Pine-Sol® to a bucket with about a gallon of water. Mop your floor with the mixture. Try not to let liquid pool, which can warp and streak wood.
